Identity Theft in Canada
I’m no longer associated with Canada’s ID Theft Support Centre, which ran out of funding years ago, but I still regularly get asked for help by victims. Listen in to hear my recommended steps, and then follow the links below:
If you or someone you know has become a victim of identity theft, here are my recommended steps:
- Read the victim toolkit from the ID Theft Support Centre [PDF]
- Start monitoring your credit at Equifax and Transunion
- Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s guidance on identity theft
- RCMP’s guidance on identity theft
What is really needed in Canada again is a funded call centre to help victims. If you’re with an agency who has an interest in funding this critical service, please reach out — otherwise, talk to your Member of Parliament and ask them fund this service which does not take much to run.
